One of the cats - a kitten in the pound, caged and looked pitiful, as if it wants affection.

Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms. - George Elliot

Dogs have always been known as man’s best friends. However, it does not just limit to dogs as man’s best friends. The two top choices as pets are dogs and cats. With their witty character, big, round eyes that can melt people’s heart, people often fall for it and take them as their pet.

These two pets are always welcome at home, being fed, bathe and treated just like they are part of the family members. Sadly, these are only for the lucky cats and dogs. They have been chosen from various pet shops.

How about cats and dogs from animal shelters? Quite a number of people may not know this but animals from animal shelters used to be stray cats and dogs or have been abandoned by their previous owners. Even though they may not be accessorized like their friends from pet shops, they need an equal love and attention from human being.

They too hope and wish someone will choose them as a pet. However, people prefer to search for pet at pet shop rather than animal shelter. Hence their chances to be adopted are a lot smaller. Stray or abandoned cats and dogs usually have a shorter life span as compared to those from pet shops. Most animals sold in pet stores come from mass-breeding facilities called puppy mills.

The puppies and kittens are typically taken from their mothers at an early age and sent to pet shops to be sold. They are taken care of while waiting for them to be adopted. As for animals from animal shelters, they had to learn to live on their own. Stray cats and dogs we often see, being abused by people just because they ask for food, getting hit by cars while they are crossing the road, or mating with various partners.

Many may not know but cats and dogs who often mates with different females, they are likely to be exposed to cancer. Cats and dogs from the animal shelters just want to be heard and be loved. Some people have misunderstanding or misperception on these animals. Their perception on animals from animal shelters is they are not friendly or infected with disease whereas they are not. Some of the animals may need time to warm up with people a lot longer than the rest.

This is because they might have been abused or have trust issues with people. To adopt an animal, it is advisable for you to have a nice and comfortable house. Animal needs their own space to run around and relax. Besides that, you need enough money to provide them with nutrition food and a regular visit to veterinarian.

However, if you are reading this and you are interested in helping these abandoned cats and dogs but do not have enough money or your parents would not let you have pet, fret not because there is another way for you. There are many shelter or adoption centres that welcome volunteers.

A 54-year-old Mariam Yusof, who is now the welfare officer from Muar, Johor and vice-president of Johor-based Noah’s Ark Animal Shelter (Nanas) that is home to 700 cats and 850 dogs that have been rescued from the streets. She said to The Star, unfortunately not many come forward to volunteer for such work. An animal shelter in Muar had to close down as they failed to keep it going due to lack of volunteers.

Meanwhile, Mariam said the pet adoption programme, first to be held in Malacca, served a dual purpose. “We not only offer cats for adoption but also educate pet owners on the need to neuter or spay their animals,” said Mariam. Besides that, we also have SPCA Selangor Adoption Centre.

There are close to 400 kittens, cats, puppies and dogs at the SPCA Animal Shelter in Ampang Jaya. The Shelter is open daily from 9am-4pm daily, including weekends and public holidays. Volunteers are welcome to help to wash and feed the animals.

All these animals want a companionship, love and attention. They just want their voice to be heard. It is time for you to listen.

There is also a website dedicated for stray cats and dogs. For more information, you can visit www.facebook.com/ktaj0311.
